Lee Groves at the Mount Haven

Lee brings to the mix his own unique style and talent acquired and honed by 23 years in the industry.  Most recently at Seagrass in St Ives where he was awarded Best Head Chef 2012 by Cornwall Life magazine, semi-finalist South West Chef of the year and finalist Best Chef – Food magazine 2012. Well-remembered for his semi-finalist appearance on Masterchef the Professionals in 2012 Lee has since spent his time perfecting his own brand and style of cooking.

Lee’s arrival has enthused the team and he is pushing forward the already fantastic food offering at Restaurant Mount Haven. Lee loves to take well-established dishes and give them a new life, for example cooking fish with a blow-torch rather than pan-frying and adding different textures to make the food more tantalising on the palate.

As we spent the winter redesigning the restaurant, Lee’s arrival is perfect to launch the new, softer and more romantic space in which to enjoy the great food. Reinforcing our place in the culinary landscape of Marazion and the Penzance area. Read a recent fantastic review in The Cornishman.

We are showcasing an exhibition of photographs of Newlyn by Baxter Bradford in the restaurant. As the fish is delivered fresh from the port of Newlyn daily it perfectly complements what’s on your plate!

Mount Haven’s focus moving forward to is enhance even further our reputation for quality and personal, relaxed  service. With Lee on board to drive this through Mount Haven will open for Xmas and the New Year in 2013. No doubt Lee will be developing some novel and mouth-watering twists on the traditional Xmas fayre to make Christmas at Mount Haven Hotel one to remember.

Ursprünglich war der Mount als der „Graue Fels im Wald“ bekannt, bis der Meeresspiegel stieg, was bis zu 2000 Jahre vor Beginn der Zeitrechnung geschehen sein kann. Der Mount wurde dadurch eine Gezeiteninsel, die zu Fuß nur bei Ebbe erreicht werden konnte, wie es bis heute, ähnlich dem Mont St Michel in Frankreich, der Fall ist. Man glaubt, dass dieser Anstieg des Meeresspiegels stattfand, als auch das antike Land der Lyonesse verschlungen wurde, und uns nur die wunderschönen und magischen Scilly-Inseln hinterließ. Interessanterweise war Guinevere, die legendäre Braut von König Artus, als Prinzessin von Lyonesse bekannt und residierte möglicherweise auf St Michael’s Mount, als man annahm es sei eine alte Festung.

Die Römer

Es gibt einige Belege aus den alten klassischen Schriften der Römer, dass Marazion zur Zeit der Phönizier ein bedeutendes Zentrum des Zinnhandels war. Heutzutage lässt sich das geschäftige Treiben der Menschen vom Mittelmeer nur schwer vorstellen, die sich am Strand versammelten, um Handel zu treiben und im Anschluss daran durch die klassische Welt von Sokrates, Aristoteles und das Römische Reich reisten. Vielleicht ist die hohe Anzahl der St Michael’s Mount Besucher bloß eine Fortführung der Pilgerfahrt und des Handels, die durch die Geschichte unserer wunderschönen Insel fortdauerte.

Ein ikonisches Wahrzeichen seit tausenden von Jahren

Die normannische Eroberung

Der Halbbruder von Wilhelm der Eroberer, Robert Graf von Mortain, wurde nach der normannischen Invasion zum Grafen von Cornwall gemacht. Zu dieser Zeit wurde der Mount das Eigentum von Mont St Michel. In 1144 wurde die 1135 begonnene Kirche durch Robert, dem Bischoff von Exter, geweiht. In 1193 nahm Henry de la Pomeroy, ein Verbündeter des Prinzen Johann, den Mount in seinen Besitz. Als Richard Löwenherz von seinem Kreuzzug zurückkehrte, entsandt er eine starke Truppe, um den Mount zu belagern. Als er erkannte, dass die Sache aussichtslos war, ließ sich de la Pomeroy zu Tode verbluten, eine Tat nach dem Gesetz, die die Gültigkeit seines Testaments sicherstellte. Dieses beinhaltete einen Nachlass an die Mönche von St Michael’s Mount.

Der 11. September ist ein bedeutendes Datum, nicht nur für die Zerstörung der Zwillingstürme in New York. An diesem Datum im Jahre 1275 erschütterte ein gewaltiges Erdbeben den Mount, welches bekanntermaßen auch für die Zerstörung der St Michael’s Kirche in Glastonbury sowie für viele weitere Gebäude verantwortlich war.

Durch den Hundertjährigen Krieg mit Frankreich lockerte sich der Griff, den die französischen Mönche auf den Mount hatten und durch ein vom Parlament verabschiedetes Gesetz in 1414 übernahm Heinrich V die Kontrolle der ausländischen Priorate inklusive des St Michael’s Mount, das er dem Brigettine Kloster der Syon Abbey übergab. In 1442 überließ Heinrich VI den Mount dem King’s College in Cambridge. Als Eduard IV aus dem Haus York ihn stürzte, wurde es wieder dem Kloster der Syon Abbey übergeben.

England während der Tudorzeit

In 1473 eroberte der Graf von Oxford den Mount und hielt sechs Monate lang einer Belagerung durch 6000 Kämpfer stand. Schließlich ergab er sich und wurde in Calais inhaftiert, kehrte aber zurück, um Heinrich Tudor dabei zu helfen, Richard III zu stürzen. Die letzten Kleriker auf dem Mount wurden in 1548 als Folge der Klösterauflösungen durch Heinrich VIII pensioniert.

Die spanische Armada hielt sich während ihrer Invasion in 1588 vom Mount fern, da sie befürchtete, dass es stark befestigt sei (was sich später als Irrtum herausstellte, da der Mount nur zwei Gewehre besaß!). Stattdessen marschierten sie in Mousehole ein und zerstörten bis auf ein Haus alle Gebäude ehe sie wieder zu ihren Schiffen zurückkehrten. In 1599 verkaufte Elizabeth I den Mount an den Grafen von Salisbury. Während des Bürgerkrieges wurde der Mount durch den zweiten Grafen stark befestigt und nach seinem Tode gab sein Bruder Arthur den Mount in 1646 auf, da das royalistische Bestreben als verloren galt.

Die Familie St Aubyn kaufte in 1720 den Mount von Sir Francis Bassett und residiert dort bis heute. Im 18. Jahrhundert renovierten sie die Kirche und erneuerten den Hafen und trugen so zur Wiederbelebung des Dorfes bei.

Viktorianische Restaurierungen

In 1755 wurde Marazion von einem 3 Meter hohen Tsunami getroffen, ausgelöst durch das Erdbeben von Lissabon am 1. November. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde das Design von Piers St Aubyn zur Restaurierung des Mounts als eines der größten Errungenschaften der Architektur des 19. Jahrhunderts beschrieben. Es ist in der Tat eine wunderschöne Stätte und sieht aus jedem Blickwinkel völlig anders aus.

Der dritte Lord St Levan übergab den größten Teil des St Michael’s Mount dem National Trust. Die St Aubyn Familie behielt jedoch ein 999-jähriges Pachtverhältnis, um die Burg zu bewohnen. Modernisierung und Renovierung dauern noch bis heute an.

In einer der „ weltweit zehn schönsten Buchten“ liegt St Michael’s Mount, das Juwel der kornischen Krone. Das Mount Haven Hotel hat das Glück, die wohl schönste Aussicht auf diese ikonische Naturschönheit genießen zu dürfen. Die Mehrzahl der Zimmer des Mount Haven Hotels (die meisten mit Balkon) gewähren einen atemberaubenden Blick über das Meer und den St Michael’s Mount. Auch von unserer Restaurantterrasse ist die Aussicht einfach herrlich, die perfekte Kulisse für eine Mahlzeit im Freien.

Der in Westcornwall gelegene St Michael’s Mount besitzt eine erstaunliche Geschichte und das erklärt vielleicht, warum Besucher oft von einem unglaublichen Gefühl der Ruhe berichten, wenn Sie uns besuchen. In die Vorgeschichte hinein galt der Mount als eine heilige Stätte. Penwith (Westcornwall) war in der Antike als Belarion bekannt. Bel war der Sonnengott der Druide und der Mount war seine heilige Stätte. Pilger kamen von überall her, um den Mount zu besuchen. Im 5. Jahrhundert wurde der Mount christianisiert und dem Erzengel Michael gewidmet, nachdem eine Gruppe von einheimischen Fischern eine unglaubliche Lichterscheinung über dem Mount beobachteten, welches in Gestalt des Sankt Michael erschien. Verbunden mit der Insel Skellig Michael in Irland und dem Mont St. Michel in Frankreich, betraten Ordensleute Bienenstockhütten, um zu meditieren und für die Welt und die Menschheit zu beten. Bis heute fährt das Mont St Michel die religiöse Ausübung mit den auf der Stätte lebenden Mönchen fort. Die Gegend um den Mount herum zieht viele Heiler und Menschen von jeglichen spirituellen Praktiken an, um in seiner Nähe zu leben. Die Schwingungen aller Gebete der Leute, die sich der Kontemplation widmen, hat gewiss einen Ort mit sehr spezieller Energie geschaffen.

Unser berühmter Nachbar

Es wurde entdeckt, dass der große Felsen vor der gegenwärtigen Burg westlich des Mounts der Knotenpunkt (oder Treffpunkt) von vier sehr mächtigen Ley-Linien (oder Energielinien) ist. Es sind die Linien St Michael, St Mary, Apollo und Athene. Die Stelle, an der sich vier bedeutende Ley-Linien kreuzen, wird als „Portal“ bezeichnet, wo die Dimensionen der Realität undeutlicher und Übergange in verschiedene Realitäten aktiviert werden. Das würde die zahlreichen Visionen von großen Heiligen und sogar von Jesus erklären, die über die Jahre gemeldet wurden und noch bis heute vorkommen. Unabhängig vom Glauben spüren die meisten Menschen, dass der Mount eindeutig etwas „Besonderes“ ist, auch wenn sie nicht genau sagen können, warum!

The unique and beautiful Isles of Scilly

The Isles of Scilly are of course linked in myth to the lost land of Lyonesse of Arthurian legend. Perhaps this dates from the time St Michael’s Mount became tidal in 2000BC or perhaps more land was lost after the tsunami caused by the Great Lisbon Earthquake which was devastating.

Originally the Mount was known as the ‘Grey Rock in the Wood’ until sea levels rose, perhaps as early as 2000 BC, when the Mount became a tidal island accessed by foot only at low tide, as it is, along with Mont St Michel in the present day. This rise in sea level is also believed to be when the ancient land of Lyonesse was overwhelmed, leaving us only with the beautiful and magical Scilly Isles. Interestingly Guinevere, the legendary bride of King Arthur was known as the Princess of Lyonesse and perhaps resided on St Michael’s Mount when it was believed to be an ancient citadel.

The Romans

There is some evidence from ancient classical texts of the Romans that Marazion was a significant centre of the tin trade back to Phoenician times. It is hard to imagine now the hussle and bustle of peoples from the Mediterranean gathering on the beach and carrying out trade which then travelled around the classical world of Socrates, Aristotle and the great Roman empire. Perhaps the amazing number of visitors to St Michael’s Mount is but a continuance of both the pilgrimage and the trade that went on through the history of our beautiful island.

The Norman Conquest

The half-brother of William the Conqueror, Robert Count of Mortain was made Earl of Cornwall following the Norman invasion. At that time the Mount became the property of Mont St Michel. In 1144 the church started in 1135 was consecrated by Robert, Bishop of Exeter. In 1193 an ally of Prince John, Henry de la Pomeray, seized the Mount. On his return from crusade Richard the Lionheart sent a great force to beseige the Mount. On seeing that his cause was hopeless de la Pomeray had himself bled to death, an action under the law which ensured that his will was valid. This included a bequest to the monks of St Michael’s Mount.

September 11th is a significant date, and not just for the destruction of the twin towers in New York. On that date in 1275 an powerful earthquake hit the Mount and is also known to have destroyed St Michael’s church in Glastonbury and many other buildings.

During hundred years war with France the grip of the French monks lessened over the Mount and by act of parliament in 1414 Henry V took over control of alien priories including St Michael’s Mount which he transferred to the Brigettine convent of Syon Abbey. Henry VI granted the Mount to King’s College Cambridge in 1442. When the Yorkist Edward IV overthrew him it was given back to Syon Abbey.

Tudor England

In 1473 the ‘Earl of Oxford captured the Mount and withstood a siege of 6000 fighting men for six months. He eventually surrendered and was imprisoned at Calais but returned to help Henry Tudor overthrow Richard III. The last clergy on the Mount were pensioned off in 1548 as a result of Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries.

The Spanish armada kept clear of the Mount during their attempted invasion of 1588 fearing it to be strongly fortified (a mistake it turned out as they only had two guns!).   Instead they invaded at Mousehole and destroyed all but one building before returning to their ships and their defeat. The Mount was sold by Elizabeth I to the Earl of Salisbury in 1599. During the civil was the Mount was heavily fortified by the 2nd Earl and after his death his brother Arthur surrender the Mount in 1646 as the Royalist cause was lost.

The St Aubyn family, who live there to this day, bought the Mount in 1720 from Sir Francis Bassett and in the 18th century repaired the church and rebuilt the harbour which heloped to revitalise the village.

Victorian Renovations

In 1755 a 3 metre tsunami hit Marazion due to the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1st November. In the 19th century Piers St Aubyn’s design for the renovation of the Mount was described as amongst the greatest achievements of 19th century architecture.  It certainly is a most beautiful site and the Mount looks completely different depending on from where you are viewing it.

The 3rd Lord St Levan gave most of St Michael’s Mount to the National Trust but has the family have retained a 999 year lease for the St Aubyn family to live in the castle.   Upgrading and renovation are continuing still today.

The Isles of Scilly: Cornwall or Caribbean.

To think, perhaps to dream, of a quiet place, a place of great beauty, washed by azure seas, golden beaches, dramatic cliff;  to wander perhaps across lonely moors and breath-taking coastal vistas. A possibility to find peace and come back to an inner serenity. Of course that place is within us, but sometimes we have to leave our lives for a while and find a place to for this soul of ours to take refuge, to lose the grip of the frantic activity of a mind confused with worries, anxieties and a lack of ease. The demands of life today have the ability to overwhelm our mind and our senses and we get lost for a time. We all need the space to clear all this bombardment to be able to see clearly once again.

Sitting in one of the world’s ’10 Most Beautiful Bays’ is the jewel in Cornwall’s crown, St Michael’s Mount. St Michael’s Mount in West Cornwall has an astonishing history which might explain why visitors often speak of an incredible sense of peace they experience when they visit us. Into pre-history the Mount has been regarded as a sacred site. Penwith, or West Cornwall was known as Belarion in the ancient world. Bel was the Druid Sun God and the Mount was his sacred site. Pilgrims came from all over to visit the Mount. In the 5th century AD the Mount was Christianised and dedicated to the Archangel Michael when a group of local fishermen were struck by an incredible vision of light over the Mount which appeared as the great St Michael. Linked with Skellig Michael island in Ireland and Mont St Michel in France, religious orders went into beehive huts to meditate and pray for the world and humanity.To this day Mont St Michel is still continuing a practice with monks living on site. The area around the Mount has attracted many healers and people of all spiritual practice to come and live in its proximity today. The vibrations of all the prayers of the contemplatives has certainly created an area of very special energy.

Our Famous Neighbour

It has been discovered that the large rock in front of the current castle, to the west of the Mount is the node point (or meeting point) of four very powerful ley (or energy) lines.   These are the St Michael, St Mary, Apollo and Athene lines.  Where four major ley lines meet it known as a ‘portal’ where the dimensions of reality become vaguer and crossover into different realities are enabled. This would explain the many visions of great saints and even Jesus that have been reported over the years and still happy to this day. But whatever one’s beliefs are most people feel the Mount is definitely ‘special’, even if they can’t quite work out why!
