Valentine’s Day Inspiration
A few gift ideas for that special someone this Valentine's Day - inspired by Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly
If you are searching high and low for the perfect gift this Valentine’s Day, why not take advantage of the wonderful gifts that are grown, produced or made in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Why not pick a posy of wonderful flowers from Scilly Flowers? Our island neighbours on St Martin’s, on the Isles of Scilly, are fortunate enough to benefit from the warm Gulf Stream flowing around the island, which creates a sub-tropical climate that makes it possible to grow scented outdoor flowers throughout the year – making them one of the first to see these beautifully bright flowers bloom. In the winter, the team are at their busiest, growing the traditional flower crop of the Isles of Scilly, scented narcissi - which grow outdoors all through the winter from October to Easter. Simply order them online and after a short boat ride and a flight to the mainland, the scented sunshine flowers of the Scillies will be with you - a brilliant gift that will brighten anyone’s day! While we are in the Isles of Scilly, we have to mention the deliciously decadent handmade fudge made on Bryher by Veronica Farm Fudge. A family owned and run business, the Taylor family started making fudge twenty years ago on their farmhouse kitchen Aga, and now have a purpose-built fudge kitchen - still using traditional farmhouse methods with Scillonian milk, butter and clotted cream. If your other half is a sweet tooth, they are sure to love the Scillonian Sea Salt Fudge.
If a pampering treat is on the cards, Living Sea Therapy has a great selection of wonderful skincare. Unveiling the secrets of the Atlantic, working alongside sister businesses, Cornish Sea Salt Co. and Cornish Seaweed Co., their team of marine biologists, environmentalists and leading therapists, have developed this wonderful range that harnesses the ‘restorative powers of the sea’. With a selection of bath, body or hands and feet products to choose from, you can recreate a whole spa experience at home - we particularly love the Sea Salt Scrub. With a percentage of proceeds from each purchase going towards Blue Marine Foundation, a charity dedicated to creating marine reserves and establishing sustainable models of fishing, it is a gift that gives back to our seas.
Skinner’s Brewery has a wonderful selection of award-winning beers which can be delivered right to your doorstep. Whether it’s the infamous Betty Stoggs, the queen of Cornish ales, or perhaps a few bottles of Porthleven, the untameable pale ale - named in honour of Cornwall’s iconic surfing break, there is an ale to suit everyone! Alternatively – go all out and try the Ultimate Beer Lovers Gift Set, a beer tasting toolkit or plan a tour of the brewery!
If gin is your tipple of choice, Caspyn Cornish Dry Gin, by Pocketful of Stones in Longrock, is definitely one to try – a true taste of spring in Cornwall! Don’t just take our word for it, Shaun Bebbington, master distiller at Pocketful of Stones, compares it to ‘those early Cornish spring mornings. When it’s still a wee bit cold, the sea is that crystal clear blue but you know it’s still too cold to jump in to. You’re probably wrapped up, but you feel warm and it’s crisp, invigorating. You know those mornings’. Caspyn’s is a classic dry gin that is made in small batches, with floral, citrus and juniper notes – making the perfect gin & tonic, with an orange garnish. As supporters of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, by buying a bottle of their gin, you too are helping to support them!
Perhaps a bottle of fizz may be more to your liking – well then look no further than a sparkling wine from Polgoon Vineyard and Orchard - we particularly enjoy the Seyval Blanc Sparkling White, which pairs perfectly with Cornish seafood! If your partner is in love with the Cornish landscape, art and wine – the limited-edition Art Bacchus is the one for you. Each of the 1500 bottles of wine has a unique label, commissioned by Polgoon through Newlyn School of Art, by artist Paul Lewin entitled Veor Cove. Each bottle is signed by the artist and the winemaker and each label is individually numbered from 1 to 1500, and will be an annual commission. Or, if you are visiting Mount’s Bay in the near future, why not treat the connoisseur in your life to a guided tour of a truly Cornish Vineyard and Orchard, followed by a tasting.
With St Michael’s Mount on our doorstep, there are plenty of wonderful gifts to pick from that will remind you of this enchanting, tidal island. Whether you are looking for foodie treats or bespoke products, you may just find them here. Continuing with a theme of art, the retail team on St Michael’s have recently collaborated with Cornwall College, producing a collection of exclusive artwork, inspired by the island, by students Sarah Cooling, Josh Harris and Toni Mason – a beautiful addition to any new home!
